diagnosed with asthma

When our son was diagnosed with asthma, we tried it all. Air purifiers in every corner, daily medications, dust-proof everything. Some things helped a little, but his sleep was still broken, and there was always this low-level fear in the room, like the air just wasn’t right.

Then one evening, my mom showed up holding this tall, spiky plant like it was some kind of ancient remedy. No warning, no explanation, just walked in and said, “Put this in his room.”

Now, to be honest, we usually let her do her own thing. She’s super into crafting and runs this little online shop on the Tedooo app, mostly selling hand-painted pots, macrame hangers, that kind of thing. She’s in a gardening group there too, one of those communities where people are oddly passionate about soil pH and moon phases. We always smiled and nodded, but never really listened.

But that day, she said something different. She told us one of the other moms in her Tedooo gardening community had posted about this plant, Sansevieria, and how it helped her kid with nighttime breathing. My mom said the comments were full of stories just like that. She looked at me and said, “I know you think I’m just playing with dirt and paint, but these people know things.”

So we gave it a shot. Put it by his bed.

And the weirdest thing happened, he started sleeping through the night. No coughing fits. No wheezing at 3am. Just quiet. Deep. Breath.

Now we have one in every bedroom. And I finally get it, my mom wasn’t just bringing over a plant. She was bringing the best of her little world into ours. A world I never took seriously… until it helped my son breathe.
