Classic Tomato Sandwich
A simple, delicious sandwich that lets the flavor of ripe tomatoes shine.
Ingredients
2 slices white or sourdough bread
1 large ripe tomato, sliced ¼-inch thick
2–3 tablespoons mayonnaise
Salt, to taste
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Optional additions:
Butter (spread lightly on the bread before the mayonnaise)
Fresh basil leaves
Lettuce
Sliced cheddar or provolone cheese
Everything bagel seasoning
Instructions
Toast the bread lightly if desired, or leave it soft for a classic Southern-style sandwich.
Spread the mayonnaise evenly over one side of each slice of bread.
Arrange the tomato slices in a single layer on one slice of bread.
Sprinkle generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
Add any optional toppings, such as basil or cheese.
Top with the second slice of bread, mayonnaise side down.
Slice in half and serve immediately.

Pair with potato chips, dill pickles, fresh fruit, or a bowl of tomato soup for a simple, satisfying meal.
