Cook time: 30 minutes
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
1½ lb (680 g) ground beef
½ small onion, finely diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
½ cup breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp olive oil
For the Onion Gravy
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp Dijon mustard
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp black pepper
Salt, to taste
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, optional
Instructions
Make the patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined.
Shape: Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into thick oval patties. Don’t overwork the meat.
Brown the steaks: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, until nicely browned. They don’t need to be completely cooked through yet. Remove to a plate.
Cook the onions: Reduce the heat to medium. Add butter and sliced onions to the same skillet. Cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown.
Make the gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps.
Stir in Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Bring the gravy to a gentle simmer.
Finish the steaks: Return the hamburger steaks and any accumulated juices to the skillet. Spoon gravy and onions over the top. Cover and simmer on low for 10–12 minutes, or until the beef is cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
Taste and adjust: Add salt and pepper as needed. Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired.
