How to Preserve Fresh Blueberries at Home for Months
Here are three easy methods to keep blueberries fresh for several months.
Method 1: Freeze Blueberries (Best Method)
Ingredients
Fresh blueberries
Instructions
Sort through the blueberries and remove any soft, moldy, or damaged berries.
Do not wash them yet. Washing before freezing can add moisture and lead to ice crystals.
Spread the dry blueberries in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Freeze for 2–3 hours, or until the berries are completely frozen.
Transfer the frozen berries to freezer-safe bags or airtight containers.
Label with the date and return them to the freezer.
Storage: Up to 10–12 months.
Method 2: Refrigerate for Longer Freshness
Ingredients
Fresh blueberries
White vinegar
Water
Instructions
Mix 1 part white vinegar with 3 parts water.
Briefly rinse the blueberries in the solution to help reduce mold.
Drain and dry the berries completely using paper towels.
Store them in a container lined with a dry paper towel, leaving the lid slightly open for airflow.
Storage: Up to 2–3 weeks in the refrigerator.
Method 3: Dehydrate Blueberries
Instructions
Wash and dry the blueberries.
Blanch them in boiling water for 30 seconds to help the skins crack.
Dry in a dehydrator at 135°F (57°C) for 18–30 hours, or in an oven on its lowest setting until leathery but still slightly pliable.
Cool completely before storing in airtight jars.
Storage: Up to 6–12 months in a cool, dry place.
Tips
Always use fresh, firm blueberries for the best results.
Discard any moldy berries before storing, as mold spreads quickly.
Frozen blueberries are excellent for smoothies, baking, pancakes, muffins, sauces, and jams.
If using frozen blueberries in baking, add them directly from the freezer without thawing to help prevent color bleeding.
