Fatmhouse Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
Ingredients
For the hamburger steaks
1½ lb (680 g) ground beef
1 small onion, finely diced
1 large egg
½ cup breadcrumbs
¼ cup milk
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
For the gravy
2 tbsp butter
1 medium onion, sliced
8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced — optional
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
½ cup milk or heavy cream
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Make the hamburger steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined.
Shape the mixture into 6 oval patties, about ¾-inch thick.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to cook through because they’ll finish in the oven. Transfer to the baking dish.
Make the onion gravy: Melt the butter in the same skillet. Add sliced onions and mushrooms, if using. Cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened and lightly browned.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute.
Gradually whisk in the beef broth, followed by the milk or cream. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
Pour the gravy evenly over the hamburger steaks.
Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake for another 10–15 minutes, until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the gravy is bubbling.
Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
Serving Ideas
Serve these Amish-style hamburger steaks with mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, green beans, corn, or homemade biscuits. Spoon plenty of the onion gravy over everything.
