🥔 Hamburger Potato Casserole
Ingredients
1 lb (450 g) ground beef
5–6 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (10.5 oz / 298 g) cream of mushroom soup
½ cup milk
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp olive oil or butter
Optional: ½ cup sour cream
Optional: chopped parsley or green onions for garnish
Instructions
Prepare the oven:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Cook the beef:
Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and onion. Cook for 6–8 minutes, breaking up the meat, until browned. Drain excess grease.
Season:
Stir in the garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Cook for another minute.
Make the sauce:
In a bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup and milk. If using sour cream, stir it in as well.
Layer the casserole:
Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Sprinkle with half of the cooked hamburger mixture. Pour over half of the soup mixture.
Repeat:
Add the remaining potatoes, beef mixture, and soup mixture. Spread evenly.
Bake covered:
Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Add cheese:
Remove the foil and sprinkle the cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
Finish baking:
Return to the oven uncovered for 15–20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Rest and serve:
Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley or green onions if desired.
⭐ Tip
For extra flavor, add ½ cup diced green bell pepper with the onion, or replace some of the cheddar with Monterey Jack.
