Amish Hamburger Steak Bake
Servings: 6
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Bake Time: 45–55 minutes
Total Time: About 1 hour 15 minutes
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 2 lb ground beef
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp onion powder
For the Gravy
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- ½ cup milk or heavy cream
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- ½ cup sliced mushrooms, optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Make the patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, diced onion, garlic, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the mixture into 6 oval hamburger steaks, about ¾-inch thick.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to be cooked through—they will finish in the oven. Transfer them to the prepared baking dish.
- Make the gravy: Melt the butter in the same skillet. Add the sliced onion and mushrooms, if using. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Stir in the milk or cream, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Simmer for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens slightly. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper.
- Pour the gravy over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish, making sure they’re well covered.
- Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the gravy is bubbling.
- Let the dish rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
Serving Suggestions
Serve the hamburger steaks with:
- Creamy mashed potatoes
- Buttered egg noodles
- Amish-style green beans
- Corn
- Homemade biscuits
- A simple garden salad
⭐ Tip
For an especially rich gravy, use ½ cup heavy cream instead of milk. Spoon plenty of the onion gravy over the mashed potatoes for the ultimate comfort-food dinner.
