Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

Servings: 6
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Bake Time: 45–55 minutes
Total Time: About 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 2 lb ground beef
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp onion powder

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • ½ cup milk or heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • ½ cup sliced mushrooms, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Make the patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, diced onion, garlic, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder. Mix gently until just combined.
  3. Shape the mixture into 6 oval hamburger steaks, about ¾-inch thick.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to be cooked through—they will finish in the oven. Transfer them to the prepared baking dish.
  5. Make the gravy: Melt the butter in the same skillet. Add the sliced onion and mushrooms, if using. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened.
  6. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir constantly for about 1 minute.
  7. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Stir in the milk or cream, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  8. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens slightly. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper.
  9. Pour the gravy over the hamburger steaks in the baking dish, making sure they’re well covered.
  10. Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  11. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, until the hamburger steaks are cooked through and the gravy is bubbling.
  12. Let the dish rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the hamburger steaks with:

  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Amish-style green beans
  • Corn
  • Homemade biscuits
  • A simple garden salad

⭐ Tip

For an especially rich gravy, use ½ cup heavy cream instead of milk. Spoon plenty of the onion gravy over the mashed potatoes for the ultimate comfort-food dinner.
