👩🍳 Instructions
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Make the hamburger steaks: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, diced onion, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined.
Shape the mixture into 6 oval patties, about ¾-inch thick.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to be cooked through. Transfer to a plate.
Make the gravy: Melt butter in the same skillet. Add sliced onions and cook for 5–7 minutes, until softened and lightly golden.
Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in the beef broth, followed by the milk or cream. Add Worcestershire sauce and onion powder. Simmer for 3–5 minutes, until slightly thickened. Season with salt and pepper.
Assemble: If using potatoes, arrange the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish and season lightly with salt and pepper. Place the browned hamburger steaks on top.
Pour the onion gravy evenly over the steaks and potatoes.
Cover tightly with foil and bake for 35 minutes.
Remove the foil and bake another 10–20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender, the gravy is bubbling, and the beef reaches 160°F (71°C) internally.
Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
